AN ALBUM BY FLYNN JOHNSON

GBT Album Cover Art.jpg

THE GREEN BOX THEORY

A timepiece of Dublin 15 told through sharp storytelling and vivid local imagery. Rooted in mid-to-late 2000s estate life, the record moves between bravado, sorrow and survival, tracing the “children of the hill” who learn to find beauty in a place others tend to call broken.

Described by Johnson as “a love letter to the estate and a thank-you note for the lessons it taught me,” THE GREEN BOX THEORY navigates the estate’s guidance and its hardships, set against production shaped by the textures and memories of that era.

Overview

Dublin artist Flynn Johnson’s debut, THE GREEN BOX THEORY, is a grounded concept album about place, memory and everyday decision-making in Dublin 15. Set in the mid-to-late 2000s, it treats the estate’s green electricity box as a meeting point and memorial.

Johnson’s plainspoken writing folds Bebo-era details, trainers on wires and bonfire nights into clear, scene-led songs about pressure, loyalty, gossip and consequence. Production is lean and era-aware, with features from ROC, Wallfella, whoisdays and dib used for perspective rather than show. Sequenced from invocation to pledge, it closes with a vow to people and place.

"Everything in this record starts and ends at the green box. I wrote it from the head of the cheeky youngfella who talked big, dressed louder, and learned the hard way that your bark can be bigger than your bite. These songs hold the laughter, the grief, the heartbreak, and the daft courage you get off your mates. It's me saying ‘meet me at the green box’ one more time and putting our small stories on record, so they don’t get twisted or forgotten."

Legitimately one of the better records I've heard this year, in a year which I've struggled to actually tune in to records

Dave Hanratty

Flynn Johnson joins Dave Hanratty and Adam Shanahan to discuss his debut concept album, THE GREEN BOX THEORY. This highly praised album is deeply personal, dealing with community, identity, and memories, while actively challenging the "disadvantaged" label associated with his home.
